My research concerns the dynamics of coordination and control of action.
Two major aims of my work are to investigate how the numerous muscles, joints, or segments that constitute the human body are coordinated so as to promote functional actions, and to identify the role of movement-based information in the control of action, with a specific interest for "real-world" situations.
My current research focuses on coordination and multimodal control of human posture and orientation, egomotion and respiration, as well as reaching and grasping in real and virtual environments, including social coordination and associated pathologies.
Methodologies involve data-based, experimental laboratory research using extensive, state of the art motion-capture apparatus (Vicon system, AMTI force plate, electromagnetic 6 DF devices), closed looped operation of simulation and virtual reality devices, as well as modeling human perception and performance.
I am involved in several European research activities. I coordinated between 2004 and 2007 the Joint Research Activity #2 “Human Perception and Action” of the European network of excellence ENACTIVE INTERFACES, (FP6, IST #002114; 5, 000, 000 €). I was responsible of the research direction RD2.1 of the network “Psychophysics of multi sensori-motor interactions”, and I have organized the Third International Conference on Enactive Interfaces, held in Montpellier (France), November 20-21, 2006.
I was responsible of the Research Module RA1 “Fundamental Research about SKILLS” and of the demonstration activity DA1 “Sport & Entertainment” of the Integrated Project SKILLS (FP6, IST #35005, 10, 000, 000 €), which finished in December 2011. I have recently organized with my collegues Julien Lagarde and Denis Mottet the International Conference of the SKILLS Project , at the CORUM international convention center in Montpellier December 15-16, 2011, to mark the final stage of the SKILLS project.
I have authored or co-authored about 200 publications in peer-review journals (e.g., Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, Experimental Brain Research, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Perception & Psychophysics, etc…) books, or proceedings.
I am involved in international professional organizations (e.g., International Society for Ecological Psychology (Board of Directors); French Society for Movement and Sport Sciences (president 2001-2005); American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, 2004 international fellow); European Network of Excellence Enactive Interfaces (JRA2 responsible, Human Perception and Action). Details can be found in the Vitae/Activity report page.
I am the founder and director of EuroMov , a new european nexus for Research, Technological Development and Innovation in the movement sciences under the umbrella of the UM1-Entreprendre Foundation. The EuroMov building is currently under construction and will host the activity of the center at the end of 2012.
I am also the director of Movement-to-Health (M2H), the EuroMov research laboratory.
